The cryptocurrency Bitcoin climbed today to its highest value since September, briefly surpassing $7,000 per unit as a rally in cryptocurrencies accelerated.
Bitcoin added 11% to its value early this morning in Asian trading, briefly reaching $7,585 and adding more than $1,000 to the value of a unit of the digital currency.
Bitcoin is the world's largest cryptocurrency and has been on a steady recovery during the first few months of 2018, reaching the $5,000 threshold earlier this month. The currency has doubled in value since December last year. However, it remains far from its peak of more than $19,000 in the closing weeks of 2017.
In April, the price of a unit of bitcoin soared 17% in 30 minutes. That rise marked the biggest one-day increase in the currency's value since April 2018.
Yet then, as now, the future of cyrptocurrencies remains open to debate as the various digital coins come under increasing pressure from regulators and governments around the world.
