Aquila Capital, one of Europe’s leading alternative investment managers, has appointed Stuart MacDonald as managing director.

MacDonald joins from Gems Advisors, having previously worked in a senior capacity at Henderson Global Investors, West Merchant Bank and Buchanan Partners. In addition to many years of developing UK and international institutional clients, MacDonald hosts the award-winning investment radio show, "The Naked Short Club" on London's Resonance 104.4FM.

MacDonald is charged with developing Aquila's growing institutional business. He notes the firm, with its headquarters in Hamburg, was one of the first alternative investment managers to use UCITS vehicles without compromising the performance of its strategies such as its Risk Parity funds and "trend-plus" CTA fund.  Aquila is also active in the growing arena of real assets, often with an SRI slant that is increasingly significant to investor, he added.

Founded in 2001, Aquila Capital has more than $5.3bn in assets under management and a team of more than 80 investment specialists. With six offices in Europe, it specialises in multi-asset, multi-strategy investment strategies that are driven by global macro trends and provide above average, long-term returns.

It is also invested in climate, shipping, agriculture, solare and timber projects around the world. The firm's two co-founders are Dieter Reutsch, now CIO, and Roman Rosslenbroich, now CEO.
