Jacques Tebeka is head of diversified multi-management at the newly formed Edmond de Rothschild Investment Managers. He talks to InvestmentEurope about manager
selection and client needs in a troubling investment climate.

Edmond de Rothschild Investment Managers (EdRim) is a fund buyer wearing two hats, according to Jacques Tebeka, head of EdRim’s diversified multi-management
division. These hats are manager selection and asset allocation.

The synergy between these two activities is what lends multi-management at EdRim its success. Recruiting fund selectors who have also been fund managers in the past is vital, Tebeka explains. Most of his fund selection team are described as ‘analyst-managers’ and had at least a decade of experience in the field of asset management before turning to fund selection.

Tebeka is the only team member who lacks an asset management background. Formerly a markets economist at French group Oddo et Cie, then director of asset allocation and multi-management at Oddo Asset Management, he has held his current post at Edmond de Rothschild Multi Management (now EdRim) since 2008.

“I am more specialised in asset allocation,” he readily admits, but is proud of his team’s wider capabilities.

EdRim specialises in several investment disciplines: long-only funds of funds, absolute return, fixed income and credit funds, structured products, funds of hedge funds and hedge funds.

New levels

The business was formed in 2009 following the merger between Edmond de Rothschild Financial Services and Edmond de Rothschild Multi Management. The goal of the merger was to reach new levels of assets under management, offer a wider range of products to investors and combine expertise from the two divisions.

Initially EdRim only targeted institutional clients. In 2010 it changed tack and one year after its formation it started to expand its franchise with partner-distributors,
including private banks, multi-managers and independent financial advisers.
