Closed-book giant Phoenix has appointed Nicholas Lyons as its new chairman.

Lyons, who has previously served on the board of Friends Life, is currently a non-executive director of the Pension Insurance Corporation and Temple Bar Investment Trust. Subject to regulatory approval Lyons will become chairman of Phoenix Group Holdings from 1 September, the board has announced. Lyons has previously worked at JP Morgan and Lehman Brothers.

HSBC Private Banking
HSBC Private Banking has appointed Rachel Wei as co-market head for Hong Kong. She will be responsible for developing client relationships and enhance collaboration with HSBC’s other global businesses.

With over 20 years of experience, Wei was previously HSBC’s head of global trade and receivable finance for Hong Kong and Macau.

Apex, the fund administrators company, announced the expansion of its US team with the addition of several new senior hires to be based out of its New York office.

Apex has hired in New York Fred Jacobs, chief revenue officer, who was appointed in April this year, and Joseph Holman, global head of allocators, announced last week. In addition, four other experienced sales professionals have joined the US team in New York: Anthony Vitale, Devin Vasquez, Gerald Barbara and Ira Schnell.

The Carrick Group, a South African financial services provider, announced the appointment of Paul de Waal to head the company’s new local (onshore) division. This follows his promotion to the position of director: wealth and advisory.

De Waal (pictured) joined Carrick Wealth in November 2015. He currently also sits on the investment committee representing the local investment houses to ensure that they meet Carrick’s standards of transparency, benchmarked success and reputation.

Carrick is known for providing its clients with specialist financial advice in the true offshore arena. It is also the company to which they turn for advice on local (onshore) financial products, such as retirement annuities, risk cover (critical illness, income protection, life cover), estate planning, and foreign exchange dealings.

Nerine Fiduciaries has appointed Jonathan Bailey as client services director in its Guernsey office. Bailey has hopped islands while staying with the Group, joining the Guernsey office after five years of running the firm’s British Virgin Islands’ operation.

Bailey qualified and practiced as a solicitor in England and became a full member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) before moving to the BVI where he was admitted as a solicitor in Anguilla and BVI. He joined the Nerine BVI team in April 2013 as managing director.

Nucleus, the adviser-built wrap, has hired financial services marketing expert Ann Flynn as head of platform marketing.

Flynn joins Nucleus from Legal & General Investment Management, where she was head of financial wellbeing for the DC pensions business. In her new role, Flynn will be responsible for leading the planning, implementation and measurement of all platform, product and brand related marketing and communication.

Ogier has promoted five lawyers and two members of its business services team in its Jersey office as part of the firm’s global mid-year promotions.

Sevyn Kalsi of private client and trusts has been promoted to managing associate, while Rebekah Agyeman and Euan Hutcheon of corporate and commercial, and Jennifer Cox and Tara O’Driscoll of banking and finance have all been promoted to senior associate.

Thesis Asset Management
Thesis Asset Management has hired Jem Turrell as the office director and investment manager, as part of its plan to build on the growth the business has achieved within the last year.

Turrell, who has more than 25 years’ of wealth management experience, joins Thesis from Standard Life Wealth where he was a senior client portfolio manager for five years. Prior to that Turrell worked in a number of client facing roles, including at Towry, Lloyds Banking Group and Natwest.
