The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) has named John Bissell as its chief operating officer.
Bissell commenced his new role on 3 January. He joins following his most recent position as senior vice president at the not-for-profit Association for Cooperative Operations Research and Development (ACORD), where he was responsible for global operations and development.
He replaces Roger Hearn as COO who has been acting in the role on an interim basis and who will stay on with the CII, a spokesperson for the organisation said.
In his new role at the CII, Bissell has responsibility for the Business Operations, Customer Service, IT, Finance and Facilities functions of the professional body, and has also joined the CII’s board of directors. He will also be a contributor to the delivery of the CII’s recently launched ‘Strategic Manifesto – 2021 Roadmap’.
Prior to joining ACORD Corporation in London and the US, Bissell worked as an independent consultant at Lloyd’s and between 2011-2014 was COO at Capita Insurance Services. He has been operations director & a board director at Miller Insurance Services and head of operations, International at Aviva.
He stared his career in financial services in 1980 on the management development programme in London and Saudi Arabia for Commercial Union.
Sian Fisher, chief executive at the CII said that Bissell’s appointment will bring a “wealth of international, IT and customer engagement experience” to the role.”
“As we embark on our change programme over the next five years, John will play an important role in helping the executive team evolve the CII into the relevant, modern and diverse organisation, which such a fast-changing profession requires,” said Fisher.
The CII is the largest professional body for the Insurance and Financial Planning professions, with more than 125,000 members in over 150 countries.
