Lombard International Assurance names new European legal head

Luxembourg-based Lombard International Assurance has announced the appointment of Ranald Munro to the new role of General Counsel for its European operations.

Munro, who will will report to European CEO Axel Hörger and will lead a multi-disciplinary team including Legal, Regulatory Affairs, Risk and Compliance functions, Lombard IA said in a statement announcing the move.

In addition, Munro, pictured below left, will join the senior management team and will be involved in “developing and implementing the European growth strategy,” the statement said.

He joins Lombard International Assurance from his role as chief legal officer of global reinsurer, SCOR Global P&C. Prior to this, having qualified as a barrister, he acted as a Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service in the UK, among other positions.

In addition to his legal career, Munro is also a Major-General and the current Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Reserve and Cadets) in the UK Reserves, making him the most senior serving reservist in the UK Ministry of Defence.

‘Fiscal change’

Hörger said that Lombard IA is operating in a period of “rapid regulatory and fiscal change” and that Munro’s legal and compliance experience will be” invaluable as the geopolitical landscape becomes ever more complex”.

Lombard International Assurance is a global life insurance-based wealth solutions provider using unit-linked life assurance solutions to high net worth individuals, their families and institutions around the globe.

The global group, branded as Lombard International, launched to market in September 2015, with head offices located in Luxembourg and Philadelphia.

Global assets under administration are in excess of US$80bn with a global staff numbering over 500, in 20+ jurisdictions.

Funds managed by Blackstone own Lombard International. Blackstone is one of the world’s leading investment firms with assets under management of over US$360bn.
