Bedell Cristin Guernsey names Kate Ovenden managing partner

Bedell Cristin, the Channel Islands-based, internationally focused law firm, has named Guernsey native Kate Ovenden a managing partner of its Guernsey offices.

At Bedell, Ovenden, (pictured), succeeds Mark Helyar, who will remain with the firm in an “Of Counsel” role, the firm said in a statement. Helyar has led the Guernsey office since it first opened in 2006, and is credited by the firm with having been instrumental in driving its growth since that time.

His expertise in cell structuring has also contributed to the Guernsey office’s rise to a top tier practice in the insurance and reinsurance market, the firm said.

Most recently Ovenden has been a Bedell Cristin partner since 2010. She returned to Guernsey to join the firm in 2006, after having spent 10 years with the City of London law firm Withers LLP.

Ovenden was described by Bedell Cristin as having “extensive experience in advising all types of clients on banking, funds, corporate and commercial matters”, and having deep roots in the local community, as a result of having grown up there.

Bedell Cristin traces its roots back to 1939, when an advocate named George Bedell set up in practice in St Helier, Jersey, after previously helping to introduce income tax to the island. Bedell joined forces in 1958 with another lawyer, Dick Cristin, according to a history on the Bedell Group website, which, it noted, led to the creation of the Bedell Christin law firm.
